The Kingston and St. Andrew's leg of the Ministry of Health and Wellness “Taking Responsibility Road Tour” was held at Bellevue Hospital on World Mental Health Day (Thursday, October 10, 2019). The presentations on mental health were done by Dr. Earl Wright, Consultant Psychiatrist, Physician and Public Health and Senator Dr. Saphire Longmore, Consultant Psychiatrist. Community members and patients were encouraged to speak up and to speak now about the challenges that they are facing to someone who they trust and seek professional help when needed.
Dr. Wright spoke about the issue of abandonment that many persons living with mental illnesses have faced by family. He further explained at there are currently 486 persons with mental illnesses who have been discharged from Bellevue Hospital, but who have remained on the compound, under the care of the hospital because of challenges to reintegrate them into the community.
In his remarks at the road tour, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Honourable Christopher Tufton, urged persons to end stigma and to show compassion to persons who are mentally affected.
