he Asafa Powell Foundation presented a cheque valued at $560,000 to the Kingston Public Hospital on Friday, October 28, 2016.
The money was raised through a crowd sourcing initiative that was launched in 2014. Asafa Powell, one of the world’s fastest humans with 98 sub-10 100m runs, matched the donations raised via Indiegogo and also contributed part of the monies received for his participation in this year’s Olympics.
"I am really happy for the opportunity to show my support and give back to my country. We started a Spread A Bed funding for the hospital and I said I would match whatever donations were made. Some came out of my pocket and some were donated from the public,"Powell said. "The reception I got from people was really tremendous. I think we cut it off a bit early or else it would be even more.”
Mr. Ruel Rainford, Deputy CEO, KPH/VJH in expressing his gratitude on behalf of the hospital said “we are truly grateful for this donation from the Asafa Powell Foundation and we know that it will go a far way in not only improving health care delivery, but enhancing the comfort level for our patients".
