KINGSTON, Jamaica. Saturday, April 5, 2025: The Ministry of Health and Wellness is advising members of the public against consuming chicken products recently found washed up along the shore of Hellshire, St. Catherine.

The Ministry further cautions that the products, which originated from Brazil, and were not intended for trade or distribution in Jamaica have been exposed to the open sea compromising their safety.

Food safety regulations require poultry to be kept at the correct temperature at all stages of transport and storage to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. While afloat, the chicken products were not maintained under proper temperature control, posing significant food safety risks.

Moreover, the affected products were manufactured on October 24, 2024, and may have been subject to significant temperature abuse during their time awash in the sea. Given the exposure to environmental conditions, the products are highly likely to be unsafe for consumption.

Consumption of improperly handled poultry can lead to foodborne illnesses, including but not limited to salmonella and campylobacter infections, which can cause severe gastrointestinal distress.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness strongly urges the public against purchasing or consuming any chicken products found washed ashore or otherwise outside regular, certified retail sources.

To ensure your safety and that of your loved ones, purchase poultry only from reputable, certified suppliers who adhere to proper food safety protocols.

For any further inquiries or concerns regarding food safety, the Ministry encourages the public to contact the local health departments or visit the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ website at www.moh.gov.jm.
